Creek Guest House sits in a sheltered spot on Galmpton Creek, between Dartmouth and the harbour town of Torquay. The main house is Georgian — quietly modernised, with a waterside terrace looking out over the moorings.
Guests come for the view, the walking, and the calm — and for a corner of the coast that still feels like a working creek.
The House
Nearly five centuries of stories
In 1588, as the Spanish Armada threatened the English coast, Sir John Gilbert of nearby Greenway House — half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh — mustered a thousand men on the common above the creek to repel a landing.
The boathouse that adjoins the guest house was, so the story goes, used to hold prisoners taken from the Armada. Two centuries later, the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, is said to have quietly used the cottage on his visits to the coast.
The building you stay in today is Georgian at its heart, sensibly extended and cared for by generations of owners — still on the same quiet stretch of water, still with the same view.
